Quantum-Si Inc., a Guilford-based protein sequencing company, has acquired Majelac Technologies LLC in a deal expected to prevent supply chain woes.
The privately-owned Majelac, which is based in Pennsylvania, provides semiconductor packaging and integrated circuit assembly services, which are key for Quantum-Si’s business operations.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Serial entrepreneur Jonathan Rothberg founded Quantum-Si in 2013. The company is focused on the field of proteomics, or the study of proteins. Its technology is powered by a semiconductor chip which enables single-molecule protein sequencing. The technology can be used to advance drug discovery and for diagnostics, according to the company, which went public in June.
In the midst of global supply chain issues, including for semiconductors, the acquisition is expected to help prevent Quantum-Si from experiencing shortages.
John Stark, CEO of Quantum-Si, said the acquisition brings chip assembly and packaging capabilities in-house.
“It also accelerates our ability to scale up operations to meet demand and support future chip designs,” Stark said.
The acquisition will allow Quantum-Si to meet customer demand, and support the company’s commercial growth, according to Stark.
Michael Quinn, founder and president of Majelac, said of the deal, “We are excited to bring our technical expertise and capabilities to Quantum-Si and support the company’s goal to digitize and scale proteomics research.”
Matt Dyer, chief business officer of Quantum-Si, said the company already has been working directly with the Majelac team for several years, and has “admired their high quality and speed.”
