Healthcare: A Cornerstone of Branford's Economic Growth
A World-Renowned Healthcare System
Healthcare is the cornerstone of the region's expansion, employing over 218,900 people, or one in eight Connecticut workers, in healthcare, which has improved access to medical services but has also significantly impacted economic development in Branford. This growth has spurred both short-term and long-term economic benefits, including a rise in construction projects, job creation, and enhanced revenue streams. Healthcare remains the largest employer in the region, driving demand for professionals across various specialties, especially registered nurses (RNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs).
As Branford solidifies its reputation as a business-friendly location, healthcare infrastructure investment continues to be a catalyst for local development. The ongoing expansion of healthcare facilities supports the town's vision of becoming a hub for innovation, attracting industries such as life sciences and advanced manufacturing.
Investing in Healthcare Professionals
To meet the growing workforce needs, Yale New Haven Health, in collaboration with four local universities, is committed to increasing the supply of healthcare professionals. These institutions aim to produce at least 557 additional nurses over the next four years. A significant grant will also help train 1,250 patient care associates and technicians at Yale New Haven Hospital, further contributing to economic development in Branford by creating well-paying healthcare jobs.
Expanding Healthcare Services
Yale New Haven Health continues to expand its presence within and beyond the region, including the construction of its new Neuroscience Campus, set to open in late 2026. This campus will feature an expanded emergency department, enhancing the region's healthcare capacity. Additionally, Yale New Haven Health is acquiring several hospitals, further strengthening Branford's position as a business-friendly location for healthcare-related industries.
In line with the town's focus on innovative healthcare solutions, Yale New Haven Health has launched an at-home infusion pharmacy program, providing eligible patients with IV drugs and nutritional therapies. This initiative enhances the quality of care while contributing to the local economy. The Visiting Nurse Association Community Healthcare & Hospice has also partnered with Yale New Haven Health to expand high-quality home health services in the area.
Hartford Healthcare plays a significant role in the region, operating multiple Primary Care, Specialty Care, and Urgent Care locations. Midstate Medical Center, part of Hartford Healthcare, is undergoing an expansion to add more inpatient beds and operating space, creating additional employment opportunities and boosting investment opportunities in Branford.
A Cutting-Edge Healthcare Facility
One of the most exciting developments is the joint venture between Hartford Healthcare and Yale New Haven Health to open the Connecticut Proton Therapy Center (CPTC) in Wallingford. This state-of-the-art facility will offer proton therapy, a cutting-edge treatment for various types of solid cancer tumors. The CPTC exemplifies the kind of innovative healthcare that supports economic development in Branford, as it will attract talent and businesses in the life science hub.
A Growing Healthcare Hub
As Branford continues to grow as an advanced manufacturing hub, particularly in healthcare technologies and pharmaceuticals, the town is well-positioned to offer exceptional investment opportunities for businesses seeking to capitalize on its expanding healthcare sector.
